How To Make A Video Game – It’s Free, And Not As Hard As You Think

Video Game making has evolved dramatically over the past decade. It used to be a world filled with tedious hours of programming in a language like C. But today there are readily available tools that do all this programming work for you and allow you to focus on the creative task of building a fantasy world game.

Finding and Using the Software

There are many free for public use video game software suites and they are all very similar. If you learn how to use one of them you can readily transfer your skills to the others. And if you are serious about your video game making, the skills you learn with the free software are a good foundation for working with the high-end software tools that the professionals use. You can easily find any number of these free software applications by using a popular search engine. Two of them that I have used are the Genesis game engine and the Reality Factory game development suite.

Five Steps to Making a Video Game

There are five basic steps to making a video game. These are the steps that professional developers take when making a cutting edge game and they are the same steps you take when making a small game that you and your friends can enjoy.

Step One – Design on Paper

The very first thing you have to do when designing a video game is to get it down on paper. This is the most over-looked step and it is also the number one mistake that many budding game designers make. If we compare the process of making a video game to the process of building a house this step would be like drawing up the blueprints. Before building a house you have to get everything into the blueprints so you can know exactly what you are building, where everything goes and what everything looks like. This holds true with game design. Before you start making your video game you have to conceptualize it. You have to draw out on paper what the game looks like, where everything goes and to take this one step further than home building you have to write a script so you can understand what will happen in your game. This script doesn’t have to be complex. It can be as easy as “The player has to work his way through the dungeon and find the Sword of Happiness to complete the game”.

Maps and Sketches

Your video game is a complete world that a player will be able to walk around in and this means that the first thing you should make is a map of the whole world whether it is an outdoor world or an indoor dungeon-like world. When you do this it gives you a base to start with. When making your video game one of the first things you will do is create a large box that contains your whole world. Inside this box is where you will place all of the various objects of your game. If your map has outdoor areas you will put in it the terrain features like mountains, rivers, bridges and building. If it is strictly an inside world you will map out all of the various rooms.

After you have your overall map completed you can work down into the details. Draw floor plans of any buildings and dungeons. Place the rooms and all the structures. To aid in the visualization of your buildings and rooms you should draw sketches of key areas. Are there temples? What will they look like? What are the unique things about your game? Draw sketches of these. Once all the concepts are detailed, and your vision of the world is created you can begin the actual software creation of your game. This translates your game from its paper version to its computer version.
Professional video game design companies spend an enormous amount of time in this phase of game development. They work out every detail and make drawings and sketches of every room, every character, and every scene. You do not have to design your game with this level of detail but you should make it as detailed as possible. Every hour of work you do in this stage of the process will save you several hours of work in the next step.

Step Two – Building the wire-frame of your game

In this step of creating your video game you make an overall shell that the whole game will be played in. These are the boundaries of the game world. Inside this game world you place all of the inanimate objects whether they be outside terrain features or inside objects like rooms and furniture. This stage is where all of the inanimate objects are created and placed in your computerized world. It is a complete world without any animals, beasts or characters. When you do this you are simply building and placing all the objects where they belong and defining their shape.

This-step is commonly called “wire-framing” because the end result will look like a drawing with many wires in three dimensional locations that define and show all of the various shapes and surfaces of your game. After the wire framing is complete you will bring it to life by applying textures to all the surfaces.

Step Three – Texturing

This “texturing” of the game is a simple process of selecting a surface then choosing a texture that will be applied to it. All game development software comes with a library of ready to used textures that you can choose from and apply to surfaces with a single click of your mouse. Professional game companies spend an extraordinary amount of time creating their own textures and applying them to the wire-frames of their games. It is this texturing that gives a game it’s own unique look and feel. It is a very important part of game design and companies have people dedicated to just creating textures for their worlds. Games can be composed of thousands of unique textures and on any professional game development team this job of creating textures is a full time job.

Step Four – Placing entities in your world

Entities are the players in your game or objects in your game that either move or interact with the player. These entities have two unique components that have to be designed -what they look like and what they do. With today’s free software you get a whole host of pre-built entities and characters that you can simply drop and drag right into your game. They are complete with their behaviors and their look. A good example of an entity is the avatar of the player. There are available characters that have all their properties already assigned to them. You simply place the character in your world and it is ready to use -and complete with a host of characteristics such as running, jumping and using weapons.

Step Five – Creating your own characters and behaviors

If you want to make a video game you can do it without this step at all. All of the tools are already designed and ready for you to pop right into your game. But if you want to develop your skill further, or if you have very specific requirements of your game that are not readily available, you can create your own characters with programs such as Milkshape. And utilizing scripts that come with your software you can assign unique characteristics and properties to your characters. This will give your game a sense of uniqueness and an individual look and feel. Using the scripts that come with your game does take some time to learn. A script is a low level programming language and you have to learn the rules of how to use them.

Creating a video game is not hard

Once you have downloaded the software you can have a one-room game completed in less than an hour. You can save this game then run it and play it -even share it with your friends. And the beauty of the software is that once you have learned how to make one room the process is exactly the same for making ten or a hundred rooms. You simply stitch them all together and cut doorways between them and you have a big and complex world that you and your friends can adventure in.

The Sky is the Limit

Once you have a good understanding of the basic skills there are any number of directions you can take in your video game making. You can further work on your conceptualizing of games, you can further your artistic skills by creating characters with modeling software, or you can create your own textures for your game. The only limit to your video game making is the scope of your imagination.

Welcome to “The Media Generation”

Teens are spending so much time watching TV and playing with their computer and video games that the Kaiser Family Foundation has dubbed this generation “The Media Generation.”

The recent study found that children aged 8-18 were watching TV, playing video games, on their computers, and listening to music for a total of 6 hours and 23 minutes EVERY DAY! Many kids were doing two or more activities at once. Most of this time is still spent watching TV. Kids spent almost four hours every day watching TV. With so much time in front of TV and other media, perhaps Kaiser should have labeled it “The Media-Addicted Generation.”

What excess TV, video game, and computer use may be doing to you

How much time you spend in front of a TV, video, and computer screen is important, because these activities have been linked to obesity, attention problems (like ADHD), and poor grades. Violent content may condition you to accept violence in your life. The sexual content of many popular shows and games may encourage you to experiment before you are ready. The TV can act as a depressant, stifle your creativity, encourage conformity, and simply waste your valuable time.

Find out if you are part of “The Media-Addicted Generation”:

0-6: Great! Your TV, computer, and video games are not in control of your life. You are. But keep an eye on how much time you spend with these activities to make sure an addiction does not sneak up on you.

7-14: You are moderately addicted to your TV, video games, or computer. Maybe all of them. The good news is that with a little effort, a list of fun non-screen activities, and a reasonable schedule you should be able to keep your addiction under control. “The TV-FREE System” also helps you create a schedule that keeps you busy with fun, goal-centered activities. Follow your dreams instead of staring at a screen..

15-20: Oh dear. You probably have a serious addiction problem. You may need to take extreme steps, including getting rid of your TV or video games, to get in control of your time. Start with the device which squanders the most of your time. The good news is “The TV-FREE System” was designed to help even the most serious addict, and can be used for video game, or computer addiction as well.

The following tips should help you get started with a career in professional video game testing.

Tip 1: Don’t Wait For Jobs to Find You, Get Out There and Find Them.

Video game tester jobs are not going to fall from the sky, so you can’t expect to find them with a few glances at the Sunday newspaper. Therefore, instead of just sitting around and waiting, be proactive and actually chase those high paying testing jobs.

Make a beeline straight toward the game developers and present your case, no matter how poor or excellent it might be. Let them know who you are, what you do (game tester), and why you would make a great addition to their team/project.

It’s important to remember that developers aren’t going to hire you on the spot; so, don’t let rejection get you down. They have lots of video game testers applying for projects and jobs, which means they can literally be as picky as they want to be. With that being said, be as confident as you can and be sure to let them know of all your gaming accomplishments and deeds. They should know about what games you play frequently, what consoles you own, what communities you are apart of, and any websites/blogs you own or help operate. No matter what the gaming accomplishment, big or small, it will help with landing you a job.

Tip 2: Don’t Think “Hobby with Pay”, Think “Career With Benefits!”

You have to keep in mind that developers pay video game testers as part of a job. They are not paying testers to merely enjoy video games at their own expense. Therefore, when you land a testing job, don’t simply play it to have fun; play it like you are earning a paycheck. Does that mean you can’t have any fun? No; it simply means you shouldn’t make “fun” your top priority while testing video games.

If you take each and every testing job seriously and give it your all, you should have a much more successful game testing career.

Tip 3: Know What To Expect

The biggest part of being a professional video game tester is knowing the golden rule; which is “You are paid to test games, not to play them.” There may be a fine line between the two, but any real game tester will tell you that the difference is definitely there.

The subtle difference between testing and playing is, well, work. A game tester will have to do actual work, such as filing reports & filling out questionnaires; as opposed to a regular game player, who will just relax and play the game at a leisurely pace. Admittedly, the work isn’t back breaking, but it is work nonetheless.

The questionnaires are the easier part of game testing, as all the video game tester has to do is answer some general questions about the game and give his/her honest opinion. The reports, on the other hand, are a bit more difficult to do. These reports need to be filed on every bug/glitch that the tester comes across, and they have to be remarkably accurate. In each report, the video game tester has to describe what happened, where it happened, and how it happened. With this detailed information in hand, the developers & programmers will then fix the problem and find out why it happened in the first place. Every video game goes through this basic cycle, which is precisely why video game testers are so vital to the gaming industry.

As you can see, there really isn’t all that much work involved with video game testing, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a serious profession.

Tip 4: Build up a Network of Reliable Contacts.

Networking is a crucial part of professional video game testing. Although it is quite possible to have a prosperous career without a reliable network, having one just makes things easier.

A network of contacts can actually help your career in many different ways. The biggest thing it can do is give you heads up about new job openings and testing assignments that have been announced. Also, some of your contacts can even act as valuable references when applying for testing jobs. And, as if those two things weren’t enough, your network can give you the inside scoop about what’s going on behind closed doors.

Much like a video game tester job, a reliable network is not going to just jump out at you. Therefore, you will have to build it up all on your own. The best way to do that is by getting to know the industry and the people who work in it. Anyone that spends time around video games (professionally, of course) can be included in your network; game testers, developers, programmers, concept artists, art designers, graphics designers, technical support specialists, audio specialists, etc. Basically, if they know video games and work with video games, you want them in your network.

Tip 5: Don’t Give Up. Keep Trying!

The unfortunate fact is that you are not going to land a video game tester job whenever you want one. As a matter of fact, it may be weeks or even months before you land your first testing job. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t have what it takes; it just means you have to keep trying & giving it your best. Not many newcomers start off at the top of their game, which means you likely won’t either. Hence, just give it time. After a few months and a few jobs, you should be able to get your footing and begin advancing in your career as a professional video game tester.

My boy doesn’t want one video game or one video game console, he wants the Nintendo, the Sony and the Xbox and he wants all the games that go with it. He also wants access to the computer so that he can play games on the computer as well. It is as if he is plugged into these games all the time, at least he would like to be if allowed. Video games are big business, with over billion spent each year on video and computer games. This suggests that an awful lot of playing is going on. New releases of games are eagerly anticipated by players and many are willing to stand in line for a day or two to get hold of a new system or spend hours hunting down a new release. Unquestionably, video games are attractive toys, particularly to boys.

Undoubtedly, parents have been concerned for a long time about the consuming nature of video games. Hours spent in front of a screen, in the dark if possible “can’t be healthy” for a child. The encouragement to play or more traditional board game or to even go outside and play is something any boy of the electronic age has heard in response to his desire to play his electronic games. But is there any danger in video games? It is possible to overdo any activity, even good ones. One can sleep too much, exercise excessively and certainly we can eat too much hence it is without question possible to play video games in excess. But defining excess can be difficult. Clearly, three to four hours a day every day would be viewed as excessive by most, but what about three to four hours on the weekend? Should we count it only if they are played straight through or even if there are sizable chunks of time in between sessions? Is it excessive if there is no real demonstrative impact on the child and his behavior, attitudes and performance? There is also the variability within children to consider, some will be affected more easily by gaming than others.

There is growing evidence that video games can be both good and bad. Video games can teach certain skills such as cooperation, strategy and team building as well as some exposure to the technology that is ubiquitous in today’s world. The new Wii is showing some benefits in terms of physical activity and is being used by some physical therapists. Do a Google search on the benefits of video games and you will find reputable articles discussing the benefits of video games. But the dangers are there as well. It is beyond doubt and well documented that TV violence influences violence in children. While there is little research into the connection between video games and violence, can the link be weaker than it is in television viewing? A game in which your character engages in violence has to be as influential as TV. But the dangers seem to go beyond the potential influence these games may have on character.

A recent study at Stanford University demonstrated that the brains of males responded to video game playing more than the brains of females, and that the increased brain activity was in the pleasure center of the brain. While the number of participants were small (less than 25), this type of research demonstrates that games do effect the brain. Other researchers are suggesting that games influence brain development for the negative and the too much time in front of a screen makes children more easily distracting and increases the difficulty they have in remaining still. The ever increasing diagnosis of disorders like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may suggest that the number of hours in front of highly stimulating objects may be compromising our children’s ability to be attentive and to occupy themselves quietly. Computer and video games will only add to this problem. And there is the issue of video game addiction.

While the American Medical Association has decided that there is insufficient evidence to declare excessive video gaming an addiction, it is only because of a lack of sufficient research. There are many that believe in time, excessive video gaming will be a recognized disorder. There are clinics that are beginning to offer treatment for gaming addiction and there are support groups beginning to form to deal with the issue. Addiction seems to present itself most often with games associated with on line communities.

These games usually involve the development of characters. These characters can develop abilities and skills as well as accumulate weapons and other assets that are valuable in the game world. The development of these characters takes many hours to develop and make the game very engrossing. Combined with the possibility of interacting with others, these online games form a type of alternate world into which many escape. There have been recent stories of divorces, health problems, child neglects and even death associated with these games in particular. Is your child addicted? Ask yourself the following questions -

Does your child:

o play almost every day?

o often play for long periods (over 3-4 hours a time)?

o play for excitement?

o get restless and irritable if they can’t play?

o sacrifice social and sporting activities?

o play instead of doing their homework?

o Try to cut down their playing but can’t?

o Playing for increasing amounts of time?

o Thinking about gaming during other activities?

o Gaming to escape from real-life problems, anxiety, or depression?

o Lying to friends and family to conceal gaming?

o Feeling irritable when trying to cut down on gaming?

Answering yes to four or more of these questions suggests that there may be a problem. If there is a problem what can you do about it? Here are some resources to get your started on dealing with your loved one’s potential problem.

The Introduction of Video Games

One of the first game systems to come on the market was the Atari. This system was simple. It featured a joystick type controller and the games had minimal graphics and sound. There were also a fairly limited number of games for the system. It was designed mainly for children and teens and adults did not usually play with the Atari.

Later Nintendo and PlayStation got into the video game market, introducing their first platforms. Nintendo quickly became a household name with its game system that improved upon the Atari with better graphics, more chooses in games and addition gaming gear to make the games more exciting and appealing to teens and adults. Playstation did the same. This was the first step towards the video game systems we have today.

Evolution Over the Years

Video games systems have evolved tremendously since that first Atari system. Today there are extreme games on the market. Game systems have cordless controllers, gun style controllers, sports type controllers and other special controllers that allow people to play all types of video games. Video games today include racing, sports, fitness, role playing and typical arcade style games.

Besides the game systems being more advanced and using advanced technology, the games have changed. They now feature graphics that almost look real. They have amazing sound and they provide a real life type experience. It is almost as if you are directing real people when you play one of today’s modern video games. This is just one of the major changes that has really taken video games to a new level. Another major change was the introduction of the Wii by Nintendo.

With the introduction of the Nintendo Wii, video gaming changed forever. This game system is an extremely advanced video game that engages the player. No longer does playing a video game mean sitting on your bum in front of the television. With the Wii system you are up and moving. Many adults use the Wii Fit system to exercise.

Video games systems have really taken off and you can find some type of video game system in almost every home in America. There are tournaments where people play video gamers for money. Adults, teens and children all play video games today. Systems are used for many reasons, from playing for entertainment to playing for fitness to playing for money. When that first video game system was invented, nobody could predict just how much of an impact these systems would have on society.

Video games, though becoming more affordable and more exciting, are very expensive. The description of a video game tester is simply someone that tests video game by detecting of bugs at various levels of the video game testing. Your job is to find those bugs and write them in order for the person that assigned you the job to edit it through your findings and make it suitable for gamers. Video game is a multi-billionaire dollar industry. It may interest you to know that the video game industry is bigger than the film industry in terms of the revenue they generate yearly.

Interesting! Testing video games is not an easy job. It needs careful concentration, as you know; your job is to detect bugs at various levels of the game. That means that you would be required to play the game like 3 times to make sure you are not leaving any bug behind. Testing of video games is more difficult than playing of video games for fun. If you do not take absolute concentration, you might miss a bug while testing the game, which means you’ve not done the job well. You got the gist!

If you really want to be a successful video game tester, you need take a short course to get you acquainted with the ways to find bugs and how to file reports for them. This course would enable you to know how to detect bugs at various stages of the game. I don’t mean you should enroll into a college, rather I meant you should get some ebooks or videos on how this kind of game testing assignment is done. After reading such ebooks, you could practice what you’ve learnt and see whether you could be able to detect bugs, if things work out well from there, then it means you are qualified for the job.

The next step becomes finding a video game job. I tell you; if you are able to learn, know and acquire the ability of detecting bugs, you would be a hot cake for video game manufacturers in this industry. The fact is that you won’t be looking for a video game testing job, rather companies will be looking for you. Who wants to spending millions of dollars producing, designing and marketing video games, only not to be patronized by games because of so called bugs? Nobody wants such a failure. So you see, the most important stage of a video game production is testing and is the final stage before games it’s released into the market. Dear reader, if your dream is to be a video game tester, you are not too far from it. All you need is determination, focus and mostly handwork, and you will get there.

It is, therefore, essential that those in video game tester jobs have a flexible approach to their work and an ability to look for a bigger picture when working. You may be asked by some software companies to really get involved in solving problems by listing specifics when reporting a bug. Again, look at this as a positive aspect to having a video game tester job. You’re actually looked at as having a respected opinion. If you enjoy playing video games and show the hiring company a professional attitude, you will be given all sorts of opportunites. Maybe you have an interest in Designing Video Games. The video game industry continues to grow with each advancement in technology, which has caused these video games to become increasingly realistic in nature. This has added to making video game extremely popular with children, but has also caused parents to question to policies on these video games.

Children play video games almost every day for an average of over ten hours or more a week. Video games allow children the chance to work on skills such as problem solving and how to work through strategic problems as well. However, as with any popular item on the market today there has been an abundance of controversy over these popular video games. The controversy that these video games have caused is a result of these games containing violence, antisocial behavior, and gore.

The concern of parents, educators, and adults is strictly based upon the belief that these video games are extremely inappropriate for children due to the harmful violence they contain. The concern surrounding violent video games is strictly based upon the assumption that these games help contribute to the aggressive behavior among the children that play them regularly.

Research studies that have been done by organizations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics show that the violence levels in some video games does increase the aggression levels among children. They feel that the children that play these video games are much more likely to imitate the actions of the characters within the games, especially when these video games require active participation from the children that are playing them. They also feel that video games are repetitive, which will only increase a child’s learning of negative and aggressive behavior. The major concern with violent video games is that these games reward children for being violent within the game. In fact, the more violent a kill is during a video game, then the more points that the child is going to be awarded.

Studies have also shown that increasing exposure to violent video games will increase physiological arousal in children that include rapid heart rate and an increase of systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Some children are naturally more aggressive than other children, which causes adults to have any greater concerns. These children that have a more hostile and aggressive behavior background are much more apt to be affected negatively by the violence within the video games they play. In fact, research studies have shown that these children have a greater increase in adrenaline and testosterone while playing violent video games than children that do not have such an aggressive behavior background.

In conclusion, research studies continue to suggest and show that increased exposure to violent video games will increase a number of aggressive behaviors and thoughts within the children that are playing them. In fact, over a short term period it is felt that any type of exposure to violent video games will increase hostile behavior in children compared to the children that play non-violent video games.
